The first thing that we notice is that the Great One made us human beings very closely related to our relatives, the trees. We both stand upright and we both like to stand tall. Also we both have the same mother and father, The Earth as our Mother and The Great Spirit as our Father.
So imagine that? The trees and we humans are actually all brothers and sisters! I would definantly say that we are very closely related!
Although we are brothers and sisters with the tree or "standing people", the tree seems to have a better relationship with our mother and father more so than most of us humans. Why is this you ask? Could it be that we humans can disconnect with our mother and father easier than that of the Standing People? Of course! Many times when we are weak, we forget our mother and father and wander around through life alone and disconnected from what and who we are. This is not good and the Trees Weep for us, especially the Willow, but that is another story.
The Standing People constantly have their roots planted deeply into our Great Mother Earth and their arms reaching constantly towards our Father up in the sky vault. Unlike humans, the tree is constantly centered and grounded and connected to both the mother and father.
Humans are freer to move about, but this has cost us dearly on many occasions. It has made many of us forget and disconnect with our mother and father.
We can learn much from our brothers and sisters, the Standing People. They can teach us how to re-connect with our mother and father.
First we must see ourselves as the trunk of the tree, the trunk is our body. The trunk also acts as our body does as a conduit, hollow bone, or pathway to the Creator. The roots of the tree are our feet and a reminder to us that we must deeply connect with our mother in order to be grounded and centered enough to speak with the father, for we are all children of the Earth Mother. We must not forget who we are and who our mother is. Once we get to this stage in "remembering" then we can hold our arms out as the tree reaches its branches out towards the father up in the sky vault...this is when our voices are most clear and the Great One doesn't have to strain himself to hear us! How can you expect the father to hear you clearly when you don't even have your feet planted firmly on your Great Mother or know who your mother is? The Great Spirit loves it when we are family and come to him knowing who we are!!!!
It is also important to let our brother and sister trees know that we know them and love them. They enjoy this tremendously and will always listen to you. Hugging a tree is not as silly as it sounds, it actually can make a tree more healthy and live longer.
So the next time you hear the phrase "The Tree of Life", hopefully it will have a new meaning to you and you will understand more how you are related to this great family member of ours, The Standing People.
